Invitation to the Ten Years of IGSN Reception

Dec 2014. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the International Geo Sample Number IGSN, and we would like to celebrate its growth and success with a small reception at the upcoming AGU Fall Meeting! Please join us on Sunday, December 14th, 5:00 pm at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis, Room Pacific J; 780 Mission St., San Francisco, CA.

You are welcome to also attend the IGSN Town Hall meeting directly preceding the reception (4-5pm in the same room).

The IGSN has come a long way since development started in 2004. Its use and capabilities have grown immensely, most notably:

  • The IGSN is now widely adopted. Its users include many sample and core repositories, science programs and observatories, and individual investigators. Nearly 4 million samples have been registered.
  • Since 2011, the IGSN is governed by the IGSN e.V. as its international implementation organization. The IGSN e.V. now has 13 members from the US, Germany, and Australia.
  • A new distributed architecture has been developed for the IGSN consisting of a network of Allocating Agents that operate IGSN registration services for their specific user communities.
  • Through collaboration with publishers such as Elsevier, IGSNs mentioned in scientific online articles or listed in data tables link directly to sample profiles in the SESAR registry.

We look forward to celebrating these achievements with the many people who helped make this happen.

Please, let us know if you will be able to join us by RSVP to mcarter@ldeo.columbia.edu.

Best wishes,
Kerstin Lehnert
